The HCCH and the Institute for European Art History present the 1^st HCCH International Summer School:

“(Art-)Forgery – Cultural, Social, Economic and Juristic Aspects in a Transcultural Perspective”

Few topics currently gain more attention than the phenomenon of (art) forgery. Spectacular cases of forgeries and the increasing number of faked artefacts in museums and on the international art market demonstrate the importance of this subject. Because of the growing frequency of forgeries and the resulting consequences for the economy as well as for the reputation of the involved scholarly experts and their disciplines, the phenomenon of forgery has meanwhile become an urgent problem, a challenge and a task for many scientific disciplines. Hence, the latter increasingly have to deal with questions concerning the prevention, the detection and the uncovering of forgeries.

The Summer School, funded by the Volkswagenstiftung, will deal with all these questions. International experts from different fields (such as European and East Asian art history and archaeology, archaeometry, criminalistics, museology) will provide an interdisciplinary and transcultural perspective (including the situation in America and China) on the topic of forgeries. Based on current research and newly developed technologies, a comprehensive and profound exchange with the participants will be sought.

The Summer School will take place from September 14^th to September 22^nd 2014 at the University of Heidelberg and will be chaired by Prof. Dr. Henry Keazor (Institute for European Art History) and Prof. Dr. Christian Witschel (Heidelberg Center for the Cultural Heritage).

The Summer School invites applications from doctoral students in art history, history, archaeology, cultural studies, social sciences and related fields. Sessions will be held in English. A reader containing a comprehensive overview of the current state of research will be provided in advance. Participants are also expected to prepare a paper/contribution of their own according to their field of interest which will be presented (15 to 20 minutes) during the summer school.

There will be 15 places available. Travel and accommodation expenses of the participants will be covered by the organizers.

Your application (in English) should include:

·        A letter of motivation (2 pages max.) including an explanation as to why you would like to participate in the Summer School and what previous knowledge you have on the subject; additionally a short description of your current PhD project should be given

·        A short CV presenting the main steps of your academic career.
